'Sea unicorns' spotted in the Arctic

27 march 2024

Narwhals, colloquially called the sea unicorns, have been spotted in the Arctic.

Narwhal is a toothed whale, a representative of the narwhal family. As a small-numbered species living in remote areas of the Arctic, the narwhal is listed in the Red Book of Russia.

A distinctive feature of males and a unique feature of narwhals is a long tusk growing from the upper jaw and twisted in a left-handed spiral. It can grow somewhere from 1.5 to 3 meters in length and weighs about 10 kg.

About one in 500 males has two tusks. And in females, the tusk rarely grows: only 15% of females in the population have it, tv21.ru notes.
