According to Gadzhimagomed Guseinov, Deputy Head of the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, damage from permafrost degradation in the Russian Arctic in the coming decades could amount to 5 trillion rubles.
“The Arctic zone of the Russian Federation lies on permafrost, the dynamics of permafrost soils is one of the systemic risks. We are observing the process of permafrost thawing, this process is accelerating,” TASS quotes him as saying.
“According to a report by leading scientists in this field, in the absence of proper adaptation measures, the likely damage from permafrost degradation by 2050 will be at least 5 trillion rubles,” he added.
Huseynov also noted that, according to scientists’ forecasts, the bearing capacity of soils will decrease by more than half by 2050, which poses a threat to industrial and civil construction projects. These processes have especially accelerated in the last five years.
