World’s smallest bird to inhabit Yamal

13 may 2024

Climatic conditions make it possible for the North American ochre hummingbird to start appearing in Yamal, according to scientists who took part in the "Clean Arctic - Vostok - 77" expedition organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences.

One of the subspecies of the smallest bird on the planet lives in southern Alaska, and a few years ago it was spotted on Wrangel Island and in Chukotka.

Hummingbirds successfully fly long distances during migrations to Brazil. Given favorable climate conditions, their habitat regions may possibly spread to the east, even to the forest-tundra zone of Yamal and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, sever-press.ru reports.
