Norilsk Nickel's environmental projects recognized as Russia’s best

21 may 2024

Norilsk Nickel's environmental projects have won three awards in The Best ESG Projects in Russia competition in 2024.

The Environmental Monitoring By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles project was named the best in the Responsible Consumption And Production nomination.

"Our environmental monitoring program using unmanned aerial vehicles has been highly appreciated for effective environmental impact management. Norilsk Nickel drones named "Dragonfly" and "Ecologist" are already monitoring not only above ground, but also underwater, providing comprehensive environmental control. These drones are equipped with multispectral and infrared cameras, which allows us to collect accurate data on natural ecosystems," the press service of Nornickel said in a statement.

In the Conservation Of Terrestrial Ecosystems nomination, the company's Biodiversity Website project was recognized as the best. "It provides information about the flora and fauna of the regions where Norilsk Nickel operates, the specifics of impacts and Nornickel’s nature conservation projects," the release says.

Finally, the jury awarded victory to the Absorption Of Greenhouse Gases By Tailings Dumps project in the Combating Climate Change nomination.

"This innovative project is aimed at absorbing greenhouse gases during the mineralization of tailings and reducing the carbon footprint of Nornickel’s products. Now the company is evaluating the potential of each tailings storage facility, which in the future can help reduce the carbon footprint of production and achieve carbon neutrality," the press service said.

Every year, The Best ESG Projects in Russia award brings together the most successful participants in the ESG practice market in Russia, including: Avito, Norilsk Nickel, Gazprom Neft, VKontakte, Urbantech, Full-cycle developer City21, Polyus, RSHB Management Assets, Alfa-Bank, BEAC, ROSTEC, Rosatom State Corporation, Gazprom, Zarubezhneft, SUEK, SDEK.
