Two new species of yellow-green algae from the genus Voscheria were first discovered by researchers in the waters of the Onega Peninsula. Previously, these algae had not been found on the territory of Russia, the press service of the Kenozersky National Park reports.
Vosheria are algae that are often found in coastal areas of the seas, swamps and estuaries of rivers flowing into the seas. They grow quickly and serve as a food source for invertebrates.
Scientific expeditions are conducted by the Onega Pomorie National Park together with the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences to study algaflora (the common name for all algae).
According to Andrey Kopytov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work and Environmental Safety of the park, the study of algae is part of the long-term scientific work of the staff of the protected area on the study of the White Sea, b-port.com reports.
