RAS and Azerbaijan scientists to jointly study fauna

12 june 2024

The Federal Research Center for Integrated Study of the Arctic named after Academician Laverov of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the Institute of Zoology of the Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan will cooperate in studying the fauna of the European North of Russia and Azerbaijan.

“The agreement provides for joint research aimed at inventorying the fauna of freshwater invertebrates of Azerbaijan, various groups of insects, arachnids and other animals. Joint ichthyological research - the study of sturgeon fish common in the water bodies of the European North of Russia and Azerbaijan - seems promising,” the press service of the Russian institute told TASS.

In July 2023, biologists from the Museum of Biodiversity Centers, together with Azerbaijani colleagues, conducted the first expedition and collected samples of freshwater fauna in the reservoirs of the Caspian Sea basin.

Scientists plan to study the population characteristics of sturgeon fish within the boundaries of their natural habitats and beyond. Cooperation is relevant in the context of the impact of climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure on biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
