The mummy of an ancient wolf was found in the permafrost at a depth of 40 meters. Researchers at the Northeastern Federal University in Yakutia conducted an autopsy of the mummy that had been buried in the ice for 44,000 years.
Scientists have taken samples of internal organs and stomach contents to study the microbiota and ancient viruses.
"In addition, soft tissue samples of the ancient predator were taken to study its genome and compare it with the genomes of modern relatives. This is the first complete find of an adult predator of such a geological age, which has no analogues in the world," the university said.
A well-preserved mummy was found on the Tirekhtyakh River in the Aby district. The predator's body was lying in the permafrost at a depth of about 40 meters, nia14.ru reports.
