Scientists discover the reason for the increase in wildfires in Siberia

03 july 2024

Climatologists from China, the USA, Australia and the UK investigated the causes of forest fires in Siberia.

Climatologists have concluded that over the past few decades, the seasonal fire hazard index has changed depending on the concentration of sea ice, which directly links forest fires with warming in the Arctic.

According to scientists, the rapid loss of ice in the Arctic will provoke a new wave of forest fires. This can happen against the background of less precipitation, drier soil and an increase in lightning intensity.

The number of wildfires in Eastern Siberia has been growing since 2003, and in 2021, the volume of carbon dioxide emissions exceeded those recorded in previous years by 1.5 times, sever-press.ru reports.
