Authorities audit Russian regions for illegal landfills

14 august 2024

The Russian Ministry of Nature is conducting a large-scale inspection of illegal landfills in the regions of the country. To date, about 770 objects have been identified, 38 of which threaten human health, said Alexander Kozlov, head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia.

"Having monitored almost 770 landfills to date, we see 38 that already threaten human health and life. People live nearby and don't know about it. Our task is to remove this accumulated harm and prevent deterioration of human health," the minister said.

Earlier, within the framework of the Ecology national project and the General Cleanup federal project, a register of unauthorized waste disposal facilities was compiled with the participation of the public. The list includes about 3,000 illegal landfills. Now specialists are checking and inventorying them, which will determine the order of liquidation of objects of accumulated damage.

This year the Ecology national project comes to an end, and next year it will appear in an updated form under the name "Environmental well-being", within which the reclamation of unauthorized landfills will continue, nia.eco reports.
