Clean Arctic volunteers begin expedition to Cape Chelyuskin on August 30

27 august 2024

The expedition of Clean Arctic volunteers to Cape Chelyuskin will start on August 30 from Arkhangelsk, the organizers of the event said.

Volunteers will travel to the northernmost point of Eurasia on the Mikhail Somov scientific expedition vessel for more than two weeks, said Andrey Nagibin, head of the Clean Arctic public project.

According to him, the expedition to Cape Chelyuskin is the most difficult in the history of the Clean Arctic project, preparation for it lasted almost a year.

The first expedition will last for almost two months. Among the tasks of the volunteers is not only to start the cleanup, but also to reconstruct the old premises of Roshydromet. This is the only capital structure in the area where technical staff and project participants can be accommodated at any time of the year.

It is assumed that expeditions to Cape Chelyuskin will become regular. According to preliminary estimates, there may be up to 40,000 empty barrels of petroleum products in the area.

Following the results of the expedition, the volunteers will draw up a detailed orthophotographic plan, which will give a complete picture of the extent of pollution of the territory and ways of cleaning it.

The Clean Arctic Public Environmental Project has been cleaning up the northern territories since 2021, focusing on legacy waste that remained from the USSR. In total, over three seasons, the volunteers of the project collected 12,000 tons of waste, according to gazeta.ru.
