Finland to build underground storage facility for spent nuclear fuel

30 august 2024

By 2026, Finland will put into operation the world's first long-term underground spent nuclear fuel (SNF) storage facility Onkalo.

SNF will be stored at the facility for about 100,000 years. The spent fuel will be loaded into waterproof copper containers and buried in rocks to a depth of more than 400 meters.

"Solving the issue of final disposal of spent nuclear fuel was like a missing part of the sustainable life cycle of nuclear energy. As part of the project we are building an installation for sealing plant and a storage facility for spent fuel. And this is not for a while, but forever," said Pasi Tuohimaa, head of communications at Posiva, the company responsible for the construction of the project, severpost.ru reports.
