Kyrgyzstan eyes carbon neutrality by 2050

25 september 2024

The Kyrgyz authorities are taking the necessary measures to improve the environmental situation in the country, and plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, President of the Republic Sadyr Zhaparov said at a session of the UN General Assembly.

"The Kyrgyz Republic pays special attention to climate issues in the implementation of its national policy and, based on the principles of green development, sets an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050," he said.

As Zhaparov recalled, more than 95% of the energy in the republic is produced by hydroelectric power plants, which are "the main driver towards achieving the goal of net zero emissions."

Kyrgyzstan is also taking measures to promote the use of electric vehicles and improve the energy efficiency of buildings, tass.ru reports.
