Deserts may appear on the territory of Southern Europe due to global warming, said Jim Skea, chairman of the UN intergovernmental panel on climate change.
"The whole of Europe is vulnerable, especially the Mediterranean. We can already see that desertification is occurring not only in North Africa, but also in the southern outskirts of Europe, such as Greece, Portugal and Turkey," he said.
According to the expert, global warming can change the climate of many countries to humid and hot. This will complicate various types of economic activities. Skea is confident that by 2100, the temperature in the region will rise by 3 degrees Celsius.
Humanity has missed its chance to contain the cataclysms and now unprecedented efforts will be required from the world's population to contain the pace of global warming, the chairman of the intergovernmental expert panel said.
