No dangerous sources of radioactive contamination identified in the Arctic - report

The expedition on the ship Akademik Mstislav Keldysh studied the submerged nuclear submarine K-27 and the nuclear waste burial site in the Kara and Barents Seas in September-October and did not find any radioactive contamination.

"The expedition did not reveal an obvious release of radioactivity from the flooded objects. The data obtained after conducting measurements did not exceed the detection limits of the equipment used and turned out to be ten times less than the natural background," the press service of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences told TASS.

During the expedition, scientists clarified the coordinates of the burial sites of underwater potentially dangerous objects, assessed their condition, and analyzed samples of water and sediments for radiation safety.

The expedition ended with a study of the features of the relief of the bottom of the Arctic basin. Scientists performed depth measurements on the shelf of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian and North Seas, and also carried out separate measurements in the Baltic Sea.
