Arctic rivers need protection - scientists

22 november 2024

An International Water Forum was held in Khanty-Mansiysk, bringing together scientists, environmentalists, authorities and public organizations of Russia, Kazakhstan and China.

The participants of the meeting discussed topical issues of the state of the rivers of the Ob-Irtysh basin. Earlier studies showed that there was no clean water left in the Ob and Irtysh. Due to global warming and industrial pollution, harmful substances accumulate in rivers. Sometimes water bodies even change their course.

To solve environmental problems, it is important to clean and restore rivers. The forum participants agreed that representatives of the Russian Federation, China and Kazakhstan should jointly participate in environmental events. Russia and Kazakhstan have already signed an agreement on the restoration of the Irtysh, nia.eco reports.
