The marine shelf of the Eastern Arctic is the main source of methane emissions into the atmosphere in the Northern Hemisphere, said Tatyana Polivanova, an expert of the International Scientific Center for Ecology and Climate Change at Sirius University.
"The assessment of our scientific group was that the shelf of the seas of the Eastern Arctic is the main source of natural methane in the atmosphere throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The long-term permafrost, which is located on the shelf, is melting," Polivanova said.
According to her, the Arctic is warming many times faster compared to other areas of the world. This is due to the fact that the shelf of the seas of the Eastern Arctic contains 80% of the permafrost, which has been actively degrading over the past 30 years, tass.ru notes.
