The eastern part of the Northern Sea Route, which is frozen in winter and summer, will become ice-free in September by as soon as 2050-2060, a climatologist said.
Alexey Kokorin, climate expert at the Nature and People Foundation, told RIA Novosti that the Arctic will not melt completely and forever in the coming decades, but in some years there may be very little ice in the Arctic Ocean for a few days.
"For us, it is much more important what is happening with the Northern Sea Route – whether it will be open not for one day, but at least for the whole of September. It is unequivocal that the eastern part of the Northern Sea Route will become ice-free for the whole of September only by as soon as 2050-2060," Kokorin said.
