Permafrost degradation in Yamal up 50% within five years

13 december 2024

Over the past five years, the degradation of permafrost observed throughout the Arctic zone has accelerated by half, said Alexey Sitnikov, secretary of the United Russia Party branch for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.

According to him, the relevant parliamentary committee has developed a separate law to regulate the usage of cryolithozone. The proposal was sent to the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and the details of the bill will be clarified at the end of 2024 following the visit of the parliamentary delegation to Yamal, yamal-media.ru reports.

Sitnikov noted that the Yamal experience in the preservation of permafrost was proposed to be taken into account when introducing legislative innovations in this area.

"The regional permafrost law is established in the district, the Scientific Center for the Study of the Arctic is working. It was the first in our country to integrate regional [permafrost observation] wells into the state monitoring system," Sitnikov wrote in his channel on Telegram.
