China completes large-scale greenification project in Taklamakan Desert

28 january 2025

In 2024, China completed a large-scale unique greenification Taklamakan Desert Green Belt which became an important milestone in the fight against desertification.

The project, which took 46 years to implement, is part of the Three Northern Forest Protection Belts program aimed at improving the environmental situation and reducing the effects of sandstorms in the country.

In the northwestern part of China, in the Xinjiang region, an ecological barrier has been created with a length of about 3,000 km, surrounding the largest Taklamakan desert.

The project demonstrates China's significant progress in the field of ecological restoration, but at the same time emphasizes the need for an integrated approach to solving the problems of desertification and preserving the natural balance.

Despite the successes, desertification remains a serious problem: deserts still occupy 17.58% of China's territory, ecosphere.press notes.
