Nornickel’s Sulfur Program recognized among best of federal project Clean Air

12 september 2025

Maxim Korolkov, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, shared his opinion about the Sulfur Program, Norilsk Nickel's largest environmental initiative.

"Nornickel has implemented the first stage of the Sulfur Program at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant. Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage - ed.) verified that it was completed. Now we are looking at how the company operates throughout the calendar year, how it will install automatic emission control systems so that we can verify the effect not only based on the results of verification activities, but also online," Korolkov said.

The deputy head of the ministry of natural resources and environment of Russia visited five cities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory where the federal project Clean Air is being implemented - Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Minusinsk, Achinsk, Lesosibirsk.

The efficiency of sulfur dioxide capture from the Nadezhda plant exceeded 99%. In 2024, the second production line was launched, and by the end of last year, emissions in Norilsk decreased by 390,000 tonnes. The company plans to double this figure in 2025. The total investment after the completion of the project is estimated at 250 billion rubles.

In 2026, Nornickel’s flagship Sulfur Program will be fully operational.
