New load-haul-dump truck to reduce personnel risks at Nornickel’s underground mines

15 september 2025

The new experimental load-haul-dump truck, created by the BelAZ holding specifically for the extreme conditions of Norilsk Nickel's underground mines, has been commissioned in Norilsk.

"Today, under the guise of domestic equipment, some firms offer machines with foreign components such as gearboxes, axles, engines. We have chosen a different path, cooperating with BelAZ. Belarusian partners independently produce key units, and engines are of Russian manufacture. This is not a simple assembly, but a real import-independent machine, created in the spirit of technological sovereignty. We expect it to be comparable to the best imported models, understanding that trial operation may reveal the need for improvements. This is a normal part of the process. The main thing is that we are moving forward," said Igor Payatelev, Director of Production Support for Nornickel’s Polar Division.

The machine develops a power of 470 horsepower with a weight of 55 tons and can transport up to 17.2 tons of rock mass per trip. In terms of safety, the vehicle cabin complies with international ROPS and FOPS standards.

The machine is equipped with blind spot monitoring systems, collision and run-over prevention systems, as well as a mountain brake. These solutions meet the strict requirements of federal legislation on the safety of mining equipment and reduce risks for personnel in underground conditions, sgnorilsk.ru reported.
