Nornickel’s plant continues comprehensive testing of Sulfur Program

10 november 2025

Comprehensive testing of the Sulfur Program for the disposal of sulfur dioxide continues at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant of Norilsk Nickel.

At this stage, the vanadium catalyst in the contact devices is being replaced in production. This operation is important for the sustainable production and neutralization of sulfuric acid, the company's press service reports.

The Sulfur Program, launched in October 2023 at the Nadezhda Plant, makes it possible to recycle more than 40% of sulfur dioxide and has no analogues in Russia and worldwide in terms of its scale.

Sulfur dioxide produced during melting in furnaces is one of the main sources of emissions. Thanks to the introduction of waste gas disposal technology and the launch of production and neutralization of sulfuric acid, Norilsk Nickel significantly improves air quality in Norilsk.

In the first year of the implementation of the Sulfur Program alone, the reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions amounted to almost 400,000 tons.
