Global natural diamond supply is forecast to fall below 95 million carats this year, the lowest since 1987. For Dr. M'zée Fula Ngenge, chairperson of the African Diamond Council (ADC), this is not a death knell but a clarion call. In an exclusive...

October market report

07 november 2011

In mid-October, one of the top managers of ALROSA taking part in a conference call was asked to describe the state of the diamond market. The top manager was quick to coin a succinct phrase saying "Everyone is waiting for something," and this, perhaps, was the best way to describe the current situation rather than plunge into a lengthy talk. It’s not the first month the market is in a state of "transition period" and nervous wait. There is no one around to cast light on what will happen next. And let people say that "time is the best healer" – but for God's sake, this waiting burden is pretty exhausting.

Africa on guard of U.S. dollar and diamonds

10 october 2011

The faith of investors into the dollar is not irrational and is not an act of desperation, it is dictated by relatively simple and quite logical considerations, which, however, it is not customary to discuss in a respectable business community without the risk of being accused of conspiracism. But since rumors about the death of the "unsecured" dollar were once again strongly refuted by the market the above mentioned considerations deserve to be treated in more detail.

September market report

03 october 2011

The August drop in prices and trading volumes could still be attributed to the off-season, but the same reasoning will not work for September. The first month of the nascent "business season" confirmed that the diamond market is really facing uncertainty. However, there are no reasons for melancholy ... as it seems. The situation will remain stable, if market participants will curb their nervousness avoiding any abrupt moves and will once again be backed by artificial “regulation” already familiar from the crisis of 2008. Forgive us antitrust authorities, but this “regulation” is based on common sense and uniqueness of the precious stones market.

Dark cloud continues to hover above diamond market

26 september 2011

Although there was debate on the actual percentage that rough diamond prices had shed, and worse still on whether tenders reflected the actual market situation at any given time, the just ended Hong Kong show confirmed the anxiety that had gripped the market.

Turning ALROSA public: too late, crisis?

19 september 2011

If ALROSA will undertake an IPO today it may still raise about $1.5 billion. On the other hand, it is possible to attract a larger amount adding the shares of the company’s subsidiaries to the offering. However, the overall decline in all global stock markets, which began last August, heralds a new phase of the global crisis and in the future these figures may be reduced.

Three reasons why the Dodd-Frank financial reform in the U.S. is irrational for business

12 september 2011

The financial reform in the United States introduced as the Dodd-Frank Act to reform Wall Street is, in fact, a sort of general cleaning for the financial system intended, according to its developers, to clear the dark corners and put everything in its place. So, what kind of possible repercussions will the Dodd-Frank Act have for the jewelry business?
