Mother’s Day Stimulant of Jewelry Sales
This year, the holiday fell on May 11, and its sales data were not yet released in the first half of the month. However, the National Retail Federation, which published the results of a preliminary consumer survey, pointed to a peculiar shift in consumer preferences. Out of 84.2% of consumers, who intended to celebrate Mother’s Day, the majority preferred this time to make one large gift instead of several more modest items. This may be particularly evident in jewelry gifts: although the number of those wishing to give their moms jewelry dropped compared to the previous year (29.7% against 32.8% last year), the total amount of their earmarked spending swelled from $2.1 billion to $2.7 billion in 2008.On the average, consumers expected to spend $138.63 for this Mother’s Day ($139.14 in the previous year). Totally, the Mother’s Day spending was expected to reach $15.8 billion.Among the jewelry designers, who produced a special collection for Mother’s Day, the mass media mentioned Aaron Basha. He was often called the “jeweler to the stars” or, to be more exact, the “jeweler to the star moms” for his expensive and singular collections, where the main element of design was a baby shoe or love bugs admired by children. Parents ready to “strew gold” on their beloved babes are the target audience of his adornments. No wonder, his clientele includes a great number of celebrities, such as Jennifer Lopez and Teri Hatcher. Basha’s latest jewelry made for the Baby Mama movie won him more laurels.
