Jewelry and Diamond Trade Shows Flourish despite Recession

08 december 2009

International jewelry, diamond and gemstone trade shows in the Far East have been flourishing despite the downturn in the US and European economies, heralding the first signs of economic recovery, particularly in Asian markets, says www.israelidiamond.co.il.

UBM Asia reports that the September Hong Kong Jewelry and Gem Fair was a great success with the total number of trade visitors reaching 39,146 - a 5% increase in comparison to last year. The Fair’s exhibition space increased by 25% in comparison to last year, covering 120,000 sq.m. The number of exhibitors rose by 16%, with 3,061 exhibitors from 44 countries.

According to the fair’s organizers, 59% or 23,248 visitors were from overseas.

According to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the organizers of this year’s Hong Kong International Jewelry Show (HKIJS), the latter was also deemed successful. It featured more than 2,350 exhibitors from 46 countries and regions, and included representation from 22 group pavilions. Some 30,000 buyers from 124 countries and regions visited the show, including importers, wholesalers, retailers ranging from department stores to specialist jewelry boutiques, designers and stylists.

The upcoming show is scheduled to take place from March 5-9, 2010 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC) in Wanchai, Hong Kong.

The World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFBD) has stated that press releases, mail-outs and reports are some of the measures that the Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show has pledged to increase as part of promotion and advertising efforts for diamond exhibitors.

Retail Jeweller notes that the management of the Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show has informed the WFBD that it will increase promotional efforts on behalf of the diamond companies that will be exhibiting at the renowned fair. The undertaking comes in the wake of a letter written by Avi Paz, President of the WFBD, requesting improved communication with diamond buyers.

The improved services are said to include press releases to the show’s database of worldwide journalists and media; a daily full page special report on diamond exhibitors and the diamond sector in the Baselworld Daily News magazine; mailings of the Baselworld Visitor Brochure to diamond buyers in Europe and the inclusion of positive diamond buyer feedback about the show in Baselworld’s Corporate Video 2010.

Paz expects the increased levels of promotion to increase the visibility of the diamond exhibitors at the fair. Retail Jeweller quotes the WFDB President: “We have also asked the show to enable companies to share booth space and to lower the costs in order to allow companies to continue their participation and presence at Baselworld.”

The JA Special Delivery Show is taking place this week in the Javits Center in New York.  Although traditionally not one of the larger trade shows, this year's Show brought together several hundred exhibitors from around the USA. There were also specialized country pavilions for Italian and Hong Kong wholesalers and manufacturers of fine jewelry.

Both exhibitors and attendees were pleased with the turnout and activity so far.

It was hard to find a cloud around the silver lining, as attendees were upbeat in their optimism compared to last year. As evidenced by the underlying tone of the Show, it may not be as harsh as some have been fearing: "This year will end up surprising many retailers" said one. "it will be a better Holiday Season than they expect or are preparing for."

India's Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) announced it would be organizing a large diamond-studded jewellery exposition in December, the Times of India reported.

It stands to include over 70 jewellery brands such as Venus Jewels, BR Designs, Charu Jewels, Shashvat Jewels, Shrenuj Diamonds, Jaipur-based Jewel Ace, Mumbai-based Gold Star and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

According to industry experts, diamond jewellery consumption in India is expected to reach Rs 30,000 crore by 2012. India's jewelry market is estimated at $16 billion and the country's diamond jewelry sales have increased from Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore since 2005.
