Why Small Diamonds (Both Natural And Lab) Are Now Big

01 march 2022

(jckonline.com) - Before the COVID-19 pandemic, some figured that, as lab-grown diamond supply becomes more plentiful, the natural diamond business might hold on to the big stone market, but the market for smaller stones (melee) was probably lost. Yet, recently, small natural diamonds have become hot, and have received larger price increases than other categories. “There’s a buying frenzy in cheap and tiny diamonds,” Bloomberg wrote recently. Why?

Could Russian Sanctions Target Russian Diamonds?

28 february 2022

(jckonline.com) - Last week, Russian diamond producer Alrosa unveiled a fascinating new product, a diamond that can be marked with a photo or even music, all part of its larger plan to use nanotechnology to trace diamonds. It’s the kind of clever innovation we have come to expect from the miner, which recently announced a slew of positive news. It’s experimenting with carbon capture to lower its eco-footprint and has released its latest sustainability report. In December, Alrosa signed a cooperation agreement with Antwerp World Diamond Centre. Like most diamond miners, it enjoyed a great 2021—excellent news for its investors, including the Oregon Public Employee retirement fund. But all that might not mean much right now, as the Russian-Ukraine crisis has, fairly or no, put it and other Russian companies under a cloud.

Diamond that's Fit for a Queen?

25 february 2022

(idexonline.com) - The Koh-i-Nor isn't the largest or most valuable diamond in the world.  But it's possibly the most famous and the most controversial, and it's in the news again this week. More words have been written about the alluvial diamond believed to come from Golconda, India, than any other gem. And millions of pairs of eyes have seen it "in the flesh" on display as part of Britain's Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Interest in the 105.6-ct stone re-surfaced this week after the 95-year-old monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, confirmed that Camilla, second wife of Prince Charles (after Princess Diana) will become Queen when he finally takes the throne. And she will wear the platinum crown in which the Koh-i-Nor is set, together with another 2,800 diamonds.

Antwerp’s diamond industry battles banks over shuttered accounts

24 february 2022

(politico.eu) - Diamonds may still be a girl's best friend — but banks are becoming less keen. That's the growing concern for Antwerp’s diamond traders, who are warning that banks risk hurting their business by unfairly blacklisting them over money-laundering fears, closing accounts or refusing to offer basic services. This new fight centers on whether Belgium’s lenders are playing their role as gatekeepers to the financial system, which is under pressure to block potential dirty money after a series of financial scandals.
