Ocean Floor Diamonds Are Officially a Thing

08 july 2021

(vogue.com) - Just off the coast of Namibia, the ocean floor is scattered with… diamonds. Real, actual diamonds. Exactly like the ones you’re familiar with—the kind extracted from mines—these stones are billions of years old. But entirely unlike those diamonds, they were carried through rivers, churned through mega-storms, and eventually emptied into the Atlantic over the course of millennia. They can be plucked from the water by the human hand, “with no trace left on the environment.” The story is as awe-inspiring as nature itself, but if you’re wondering why you didn’t know “ocean diamonds” exist, you aren’t alone.

Amplify Our Environmental Message

07 july 2021

(diamonds.net) - When Pandora announced that it was moving to synthetics because the segment aligned with its sustainability goals, the natural-diamond trade responded by highlighting the tens of millions of people who depend on mined diamonds for income. “The misleading narrative created by the Pandora announcement implying the natural-diamond industry is both less ethical and the impetus behind Pandora’s move to lab-grown diamonds…can have unintended but substantial consequences [for] communities in developing nations,” read the statement from the five trade groups representing the natural sector. That is a good argument. The natural-diamond industry’s contribution to communities around the world is considerable and has no parallel in the lab-grown sector. But the groups’ statement did not address Pandora’s broader claims: the issue of sustainability, and particularly the environment.

Loan Stars: How Jewelers Managed the Crisis

05 july 2021

(diamonds.net) - Despite the lockdowns, mask mandates, economic anxiety and fraught political landscape, 2020 wasn’t a bad year for jewelers. “So many retailers find themselves in the best cash positions they have had in years, if not the best in their history,” says Abe Sherman, CEO of business consulting firm Buyers Intelligence Group. US jewelry sales figures for March 2021 testify to that: They more than doubled year on year, increasing by 106%, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. One reason for the surge was the strong base comparison with March 2020, notes the analytics service, since that was when the pandemic first started to hit retail. However, Mastercard also points to consumers having extra cash for jewelry due to government stimulus payments. Independent jewelers’ bottom lines also benefitted from widespread governmental assistance. In January, the US Department of Treasury reported that its Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) had so far “successfully provided 5.2 million loans worth $525 billion to America’s small businesses, supporting more than 51 million jobs.”

() - A former De Beers Group senior executive has been appointed to the board of Opsydia, a sub-surface laser specialist working to improve identification in the diamond industry. Former De Beers Group senior executive, Jonathan Kendall, joins the company’s non-executive board of directors. In the role he will be responsible for advocating for Opsydia’s solutions and its innovative commercial benefits at all stages of the diamond pipeline.
