De Beers Ensures Zero Accident Rate On Its Mining Vessels
11 september 2020
De Beers, in cooperation with the French telecommunications company Orange Business Services, the arm of France Télécom, intends to ensure zero accidents on its mining vessels through the use of geofencing (monitoring of the risk zone). Geofencing is provided by electronic ‘anchors’ and Bluetooth bracelets that automatically alert a worker to a life-threatening location. This is all the more difficult when the production facility is on a sea vessel.
The Newest “All-Diamond” Ring Was Probably the First
09 september 2020
(jckonline.com) - In late August, Rapaport News ran an item about an “all-diamond ring,” called the Beaufort (pictured), that had been sent to the Gemological Institute of America’s New York City lab for evaluation. The 13.15 ct. ring looked like the latest attempt to craft an item made completely out of diamond. It followed two all-diamond rings made from lab-grown material—one from Diamond Foundry, crafted by Apple designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson, and the other from Dutch Diamond Technologies. For a long time, the first company to try it appeared to be Geneva-based company Shawish in 2011. Now it turns out that this most recent all-diamond ring was probably the first—although its existence has not been publicized until now.

Rough-Market Momentum Set to Continue
07 september 2020
(diamonds.net) - The resurgence in rough-diamond trading will persist for another two months as manufacturers fill supply shortages and retail demand rises, dealers predicted. “There’s still a gap, because demand is there, and supply is very limited and will be limited for a couple of months,” a sightholder said. Polished originating from rough bought in August won’t hit the market until mid-October, as it takes around six weeks to complete the entire manufacturing and grading process, he explained. De Beers sold around $300 million worth of rough last month and Alrosa approximately $200 million after months of low sales that have led to scarcities in certain categories, industry insiders told Rapaport News this week. Shortages have emerged in several polished categories as India’s manufacturing sector shut down from late March until late May due to the coronavirus pandemic. Those shortfalls will remain for the coming months as continued Covid-19 restrictions mean polished production is at around 30% to 60% of capacity, manufacturers said.
