The Lab-Grown Diamond Patent Battle Is Heating Up

10 february 2020

(jckonline.com) - To grow diamonds, you need a lot of heat and pressure. And now, we’re seeing that on the legal front as well. On Friday, the High Court of Singapore ruled that diamond grower IIa Technologies had infringed on a patent (SG 872) held by De Beers’ industrial diamond division, Element Six. The patent relates to the production of diamonds using the chemical vapor deposition method. In her 199-page ruling, which followed a trial and four years of litigation, Justice Valerie Thean ordered IIa—whose diamonds are sold by sister company Pure Grown Diamonds—to cease producing any items that infringe on Element Six’s CVD growing patent.

Can Nanotechnology Save the Diamond Trade?

07 february 2020

(diamonds.net) - It’s not easy for a diamantaire to compete in the emerging diamond-traceability market, admits Bruno Scarselli, a New York-based supplier of fancy-color diamonds. As the likes of De Beers, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and others roll out their tracking programs, he urges the trade as a whole to look beyond blockchain and consider its biggest obstacles. “We need to restore trust in our product and inject liquidity back into the market,” stresses Scarselli in his pitch about technology that he believes will help the industry meet those challenges.

Is Blockchain the New Ethical Gold Rush? Maybe

06 february 2020

(nytimes.com) - Established as the driving technology behind cryptocurrencies, in an effort to solve that sector’s traceability shortcomings, blockchain is being considered by luxury jewelry powerhouses and the mining industry alike to guarantee the ethical provenance of gold mined in small operations, what the industry calls artisanal gold. The regulatory oversight of these smaller operations, which produce 25 percent of the world’s gold supply, is usually spotty or nonexistent, and working conditions often are dangerous. So, the thinking goes, if larger companies and jewelry businesses require such operations to record information on a shared database, which in the blockchain can be viewed but not edited, they then can decide whether to buy output. And such economic pressure could force improvements.

Ensuring the terms of battle are truth and fairness

05 february 2020

(jewellermagazine.com) - A lot has happened since our last Great Diamond Debate. The continuing brouhaha concerning natural versus lab-grown diamonds is nothing but a latter-day ‘land grab’, in this case for the hearts and minds of consumers. Make no bones about it. For the new lab-grown companies to achieve long-term profitability, they must capture the customer base of the natural diamond market. This has all the hallmarks of the video-format war of the late 1970s and early 1980s where Sony’s Betamax and JVC’s VHS battled for supremacy; however, while that was a zero sum game, which resulted in death for the loser Betamax, man-made and natural diamonds can co-exist. That’s not to say this fight will be fair, let alone decent.

Anglo’s Cutifani promises changes in diamond sights as De Beers embarks on “re-think”

04 february 2020

(miningmx.com) - Anglo American CEO, Mark Cutifani, confirmed the group’s 85%-owned De Beers was considering an overhaul in the way in which it sold rough diamonds to cutters and polishers – known as the mid-stream – , adding that no buyer “will be unaffected”. “We have to re-think and re-imagine it, but we also need to do it with the midstream, not to the mid-stream,” he said of about 85 companies invited at regular times throughout the calendar year to buy rough diamonds from De Beers. “I don’t know where it will land but everyone who is a partner will have to look at a different world,” he said. Cutifani was commenting in an interview with Miningmx at the Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town.
