The only question retailers must answer
09 october 2019
(jewellermagazine.com) - Everything that moves in the world of retail is measured. Data rushes over the retail landscape 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Opinions are everywhere, most of them from people who have no retail credibility, little retail experience outside their narrow viewpoint, and often an axe to grind. Technology continues its unstoppable invasion into every crevice of retail and social media creates impacts and reverberations that have little to do with the levers that create profit. The net result is that retailers are drowning in noise. Most of it is irrelevant but nonetheless distracting – if not damaging – to clear, concise and productive decision-making.
Shopper power grows
08 october 2019
(hkmb.hktdc.com) - One category of shopper is growing rapidly – those that travel. The ranks of travelling shoppers from Mainland China have been expanding particularly quickly, both in numbers and spending power. Jorge Martin, Head of Fashion Research at Euromonitor International, told a seminar at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s CENTRESTAGE fashion fair that travelling shoppers are a key element in the global fashion industry, with the mainland leading the trend.
Hong Kong jewellery fair – the world’s largest – robbed of sparkle by protests, US-China trade war, reports drop in turnout
07 october 2019
(sg.news.yahoo.com) - The Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, the world’s largest jewellery fair, might have attracted half its usual number of visitors and buyers of diamonds, as well as fewer exhibitors, who brought half their usual offering to the event, in a climate blighted by poor sales, the US-China trade war and the Hong Kong protests, according to a regular attendee. The fair was held on September 16-22. “This year, overall activity at the exhibition was lower than usual. Among the large industry players, few did not participate. But those who arrived, brought in 40 per cent to 50 per cent less products than usual,” Evgeny Agureev, director of sales at Mirny, East Siberia-based state-backed company Alrosa said in an interview. “According to our observation, the number of visitors to the exhibition and buyers of diamonds was half the usual,” he said, adding that attendance was hit by an unfavourable environment for the diamond industry, the protracted US-China trade war and the anti-government protests in Hong Kong.
Holiday retail sales could climb 5% despite ‘unprecedented uncertainty’
04 october 2019
(cnbc.com) - Retailers could be in for a jolly jump in sales this holiday season, despite headwinds like the U.S.-China trade war and the threat of another economic slowdown. Holiday retail sales for 2019 are forecast to increase 4.5% to 5%, exceeding $1.1 trillion, according to an annual survey by Deloitte. That would be better than the Census Bureau data of sales growth of 3.1% on sales of $1.09 trillion from last November to January. “I think this will be a surprise for our clients,” said Rod Sides, vice chairman of Deloitte’s retail and distribution practice in the U.S. “I think most [retailers] would expect a slightly lower increase. ... This is probably bigger than those expectations.” A separate forecast by global consulting firm AlixPartners is calling for holiday sales growth of 4.4% to 5.3%.
Lab-grown diamonds 'like cloning', Dior jewellery chief says
03 october 2019
(asiaone.com) - In the 20 years since Victoire de Castellane joined the house of Dior to establish its high jewellery arm, Dior Joaillerie, in 1999, the brand has gone through at least five creative directors for its women's ready-to-wear line. In a fickle industry such as luxury, de Castellane's longevity is an exception, but she's quick to point out that the rarefied milieu of jewellery is a far cry from the fast-paced world of fashion. "Jewellery is not like fashion; it's a different rhythm. It takes me two years to create a collection, and fashion is every two months, so it's very important for Dior to have somebody who embodies the spirit of the jewellery," she says when we meet during the autumn/winter couture shows in Paris at the launch of Gem Dior, the brand's latest high-jewellery range.
