How the Public Missed the Sale of Lesedi la Rona at Auction
01 august 2016
(ehudlaniado.com) - The Lesedi la Rona is no doubt a rare diamond of exceptional quality and size. It is unusual and remarkable. Mined in Botswana by Lucara, this exceptionally large diamond is a beautiful and extremely rare find. After examining it, I believe it can yield a very high-quality fancy shape cut polished diamond weighing over 350 carats, alongside several additional secondary diamonds of significant size and quality. Many were surprised that the diamond didn’t find a buyer at auction. There are several reasons why, and I want to discuss a few of them.

End Sanctions on Russia, Join Forces to Battle ISIS
28 july 2016
(polishedprices.com) - Since 2014, the West has imposed a series of sanctions on Russia in an extended response to Pro-Russian military forces taking control of the Crimean Peninsula. While global powers wrestle among themselves, some may fall victim to the arm-wrestling. At times, sanctions affect both sides in the conflict. Thus, economic sectors from the country applying them also want to avoid the economic consequences of losing some or all of their business. The economic price tends to be high. Russia is a large producer of oil and gas, and the entire world is a consumer of these commodities, at times fiercely competing for access. So while Russia suffered from a decline in energy prices, it diverted much of its sales from the West to other regions in the world. Rising powers such as China and India are now signing supply contracts with Russian energy firms that will outlast any sanctions. They will get an important supply that comes at the expense of Europe and the US. Russia is also an important source of other important resources such as steel and primary aluminum. With manufacturing shifting from Western to Eastern countries, the power of the sanctions has been limited. We have more in common with Russia and its allies than ever before – economic ties, mutual trade, even deep cultural bonds. We should not be facing off with Russia but rather we should join forces together to strengthen our mutual battle against Muslim extremism.

Time to Stop Bad Financial Practices in the Diamond Industry
26 july 2016
(ehudlaniado.com) - An interesting opinion column highlighted the legal aspects of some of the business closures in the Indian diamond sector. Prominent Indian industry member Sanjay Kothari, formerly chair of the GJEPC, advocated much stronger steps against those involved in shady dealings. I’m not an investigative journalist and so not in the position to opine as to whether the actions he writes about are criminal or not. But I am a seasoned businessman, and can speak to business practices. I have spoken many times in the past against the heavy lending practices we see in many parts of the diamond pipeline. I think that an oversupply of exports favoring bank financing may lead some diamond manufacturers and dealers into a false sense of euphoria and may result in very unhealthy and unprofessional decision-making. Such practices could even lead to criminal thoughts.
