05 january 2015
From 2008 to 2013, the diamond market was noted for "roller coaster" behavior, but in 2013 its trend displayed signs of balancing the trajectory and now it is on the track of sustainable growth in all the segments of the diamond pipeline, as it follows from the annual report on the global diamond industry, "Diamonds: Timeless Gems in a Changing World" released by Bain & Company and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre. The report contains the results of 2013 and the first half of 2014 across the entire diamond pipeline, as well as forecasts for supply and demand.
How much should a diamond cost?
29 december 2014
In a broad article by Martin Rapaport carried under the title "Honest Grading," the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) was named the main culprit in overgrading diamonds through its extensive global network of independent diamond laboratories. As a result, EGL announced the closure of some of its laboratories terminating the EGL International brand in early December. Who is right and who is wrong in this debate related to the opacity of diamond prices?

Affordable access to credit has often been challenging for small enterprises in Europe, but the problem of financing has risen to an emergency level in recent history. Diamond traders are particularly exposed to the discrepancy between the demand and supply of credit caused by the economic crisis.
Supporting domestic producers, or What do diamond and emerald markets in Russia have in common?
15 december 2014
In November this year, ALROSA started signing long-term contracts for the supply of diamonds in the contract period of 2015-2017. On the backdrop of possible sanctions and aggravation in relations with the EU, the Russian state-owned company announced that it would take into account the interests of Russian diamond manufacturers "if there will be available resource capabilities." However, the question is whether all this is really about changing priorities?

ALROSA adjusts “paper loss” in the interests of shareholders - investment banks
01 december 2014
The results of ALROSA in the third quarter of 2014, despite a fall compared to the previous period (due to a seasonal decline in sales and prices caused by modifications in the miner’s product mix), surpassed consensus forecasts. The devaluation of the national currency, which allows ALROSA (where exports take up almost 90% in revenues) to maximize its ruble income, is an important factor supporting its performance. However, simultaneously it is the ruble devaluation, which has posed a dilemma for the diamond miner.

The second edition of the Zimbabwe Diamond Conference came and went and here I highlight some of the major talking points addressed by the industry players. The issues centred mainly on the need for Zimbabwe to do much more exploration, the need to implement proper beneficiation and value addition activities, brand the country’s production so it can enter international markets, as well as participate and work together with other countries in the diamond business.

Gold miners in Russian Federation sacrifice upside for sustainability
10 november 2014
A negative outlook for gold prices and capital-intensive projects make the largest Russian gold miners increasingly resort to hedge contracts. This mechanism provides a guaranteed income from the sale of their products to counterparty banks, almost regardless of fluctuations in the market price for gold. When prices were high, gold producers did not enter into hedge contracts, resorting to them only for project financing. However, the 30-percent drop in prices in 2013 changed the attitude to hedging, as it provided stable revenues for companies in the downturn.

Under the agreement, Afri-Can and its local partner had the option to acquire a 90 percent interest in DFI's diamond mining leases numbered 111, 138, 139 and 32 located off the coast of Namibia in exchange for spending $3.3 million within two years on a programme designed to place the properties back into commercial production.
