Celebs Promoting Jewelry

30 april 2010

The so-called season of awards was ended with the Oscar Ceremony postponed to early March due to the Olympic Games in Vancouver. Mass media concur that stars during the season did not stagger our imagination with their attire and jewelry. It is noted that most pieces were bound to classics. The only significant innovation of the season was using jewelry in hairdos.

The majority of jewelry brands represented on the red carpets of BAFTA, Cesar and Oscar were not newcomers. These were Tiffany, de Grisogono, Kwiat, Fred Leighton, Chopard, Neil Lane, Harry Winston and others.

The De Beers-connected Diamond Information Center (DIC) placed a special emphasis on the Oscar’s Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan who graced the red carpet wearing Everlon Diamond Knot pieces, all by Fred Leighton.

Howerver, the pre-Oscar shows saw some newcomers. According to New Zealand Herald, one of them was Robinson Designer Goldsmith.

Ken Robinson and his twin sons, Michael and David, create high-end, one-off pieces from their Takapuna store and workshop. The trio use New Zealand gold and ethically mined diamonds and gems and Ken Robinson describes their jewelry as colorful, fresh and very different from what is in Los Angeles.

In December, some of their "Skull Duggery" designs were featured in L.A.'s Vamped magazine and they were contacted by Oscar organizers.

Anita Talbert, the founder of Hollywood Award Suites, said she invited the company to the showcase because she knew celebrities would love its jewelry and the jeweler had a huge following in L.A.

Not only cinema award ceremonies, but movies too were used as a promotion tool by jewelry companies. Earlier this year the trick was chosen by Chopard in “Nine.” There is another film set for U.S. national release on April 23 with Jennifer Lopez in the leading role, The Back-up Plan, National Jeweler says, where she will wear sterling silver and gold designs created by Rachel Bertoni of Bertoni Designs, based in Sugar Loaf, N.Y.

In various scenes throughout the movie, Lopez wears 11 pieces including a series of eight sterling silver and gold stackable rings, plus three sterling silver bracelets, including one plain bracelet, one that features a cascade of garnet and iolite stones along its side and one sprinkled with black diamonds.

In much the same way jewelers collaborate with television. After a mid-season break, the hit CW show Gossip Girl returns and jewelry will be getting a primetime spotlight, according to National Jeweler.

Character Blair Waldorf will be back and sporting a signature jewelry piece that one designer is hoping will be the new horseshoe necklace (the trend fueled by character Carrie Bradshaw's go-to bauble on Sex and the City).

In earlier seasons, Blair donned Alex Woo's "Little Letters" diamond necklace featuring her initials, but her new signature will be the designer's diamond "Fleur de Lis" necklace from the "Little Faith" collection, a symbol of purity and light befitting of Blair's ideals and how she would like the world to see her (fans of the show familiar with the character's cunning ways know otherwise).

In addition to the $728 necklace's time on air, the network is said to be launching a secret Gossip Girl promotion around it, making for some extra high-profile exposure.

Mass media also did not avoid to mention Loree Rodkin, the designer of the earrings in which Michelle Obama appeared at the inauguration ball. The news event was caused by the ceremony during which the earrings were handed over to the Smithsonian Institute.

De Beers sponsored the Love Ball, the Naked Heart Foundation fundraiser, hosted by Natalia Vodianova and Lucy Yeomans, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar UK, according to israelidiamond.co.il.

According to a De Beers press release, host Natalia Vodianova wore a stunning De Beers necklace made of pear-cut diamonds, totaling over 122 carats; while Italian supermodel Mariacarla Boscono was ravishing in the beautiful Arabesque earrings and cuff from De Beers.

The charity’s centerpiece was The Magic Moment necklace, designed by Vodianova herself and created by De Beers.
