Diamond size does matter

13 october 2011

A huge variety of diamond jewelry so lavishly offered today by famous manufacturers is maybe able to excite the imagination of an inexperienced person but not of the celebrities who are sort of challenging each other in a competition to see who looks more brilliant, elegant and high-priced in all senses. It has become a usual picture to see diamonds sparkling on the stage and on the red carpet where the annual film festival’s awards are presented.

What serves as a specific criterion for evaluation of refinement, brilliance and wealth? Inimitable design of jewelry? Its creator’s brand? Or the number of stones and carats in a jewelry piece? Certainly, all the above does, to equal extent. However, the diamond size, its carats deserve special mentioning. There is much evidence indicating that nowadays large stones are in fashion.

A large polished diamond is always an exclusive item, it lays emphasis on the high style of its owner, her or his unique individuality and being well off. The more carats are in a single stone, the higher is the price of one carat. From everlasting, the crowned persons were worthy possessors of luxurious stones of a very large size because they inherited incalculable wealth from their royal families, and since recently, some famous Hollywood actresses are such possessors as well. It is noteworthy, that it was not always that the latter owned their jewelry. Very often, they hired jewelry. At present, there is an upward trend in purchasing capacity displayed by the average class consumers.

Lately, giving very large diamond wedding rings as gifts has become a fashionable tradition. Famous brands are trying to catch up with it manufacturing their engagement rings as many as they can: Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co, Bulgari, Garrard. Graff, a British jewelry giant, offers wedding rings for brides graced with huge heart-shaped diamonds. It is accepted that the larger is the stone, the stronger is the feeling. So, Kris Humphries, the United States occupation basketball player, has put all his love into the engagement diamond ring for his bride Kim Kardashian, an American actress and model. The ring custom-made by the US jeweler Lorraine Schwartz is crowned with a 16.5-carat diamond accompanied by a couple of 2-carat diamonds to make 20.5 carats of stones of the highest purity and transparence. The price of the ring is about US$ 2 million.

Diamonds are not only luxury items or romantic gifts. They are a good investment for all who can afford it. When the aim is to save and augment the capital, polished diamonds are among the most guaranteed lucrative niches on the current luxury market. It is the large high-quality diamonds weighing minimum 1 carat that are perceived as the most reliable investments. It is not easy to find such on the market, it is easier and more reliable to order them in a jewelry company. From the profitability point of view, buying of a loose diamond is more attractive, because the demand for jewelry is higher than for an individual diamond. One can save minimum 40-50 percent of the stone price. From the point of view of saving money, it is prudent to invest it in exclusive designer-made jewelry.

Diamonds have got a reliable status of eternal values, everlasting and never becoming out of date or out of fashion. With the higher consumer welfare and growing middle class, demand for good-quality diamonds will only increase. This is another proof that large diamonds will be a permanent and never failing companion of their owners for years to come.
