The Ancient Jewelry Market Has A Counterfeit Problem

16 august 2021

(jckonline.com) - As a celebrated jewelry historian, Dr. Jack Ogden gets to see some of the most impressive pieces in the world. But lately, he’s been spending much of his time looking at equally impressive fakes.
When people think of counterfeit jewelry, they usually picture fake watches or Chinese knockoffs, like the haul recently seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Louisville, Ky.
But Ogden, the founder and current president of the Society of Jewellery Historians, estimates that about half the “antique” gold jewelry on the market is actually fake.

Brandee Dallow Is Joining SCS. Will Miners Follow?

12 august 2021

(jckonline.com) - Brandee Dallow, a highly regarded industry executive who has worked for the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), De Beers, and Rio Tinto, is joining SCS Global Services as director of its jewelry sustainability program, JCK can report. The news comes as more companies are signing on to SCS’ Certified Sustainability Rated Diamond program which audits gems and their producers against a 133-page standard. WD Lab Grown Diamonds was the first to get certified, and growers Green Rocks, Lusix, and Meylor Global are among the next in line. Yet the program is meant to certify more than lab-grown diamonds; it’s also open to natural diamonds, colored stones, and recycled gems. But so far, no miners have signed up.

The Dangerous Rise of China’s Luxury Bargain Hunter

11 august 2021

(jingdaily.com) - A paradox of China’s flourishing luxury market is that the desirability of owning a luxury brand product has created a whole new luxury consumer segment — the luxury bargain hunter. This trend has mostly gone unnoticed, as brand executives are likely to have a more idealized vision of their target clientele. That vision likely isn’t a person who scrolls their search results on the web to find the best deal. Nonetheless, the reality is that the democratic aspirations of a broader class of consumers are attracting shoppers who are both brand conscious and price sensitive. Many Chinese consumers with limited financial resources are younger and will be buying luxury products for the first time. To provide context, GDP per capita in China was around $11,000 in 2020 compared to $63,200 in the US. Yet, some consumers do not want to miss out on living at least a part of the luxury dream.

De Beers Reveals Plans for Retail, Botswana

10 august 2021

(diamonds.net) - De Beers had a strong first half of 2021, with sales in its rough and other businesses benefiting from the diamond market’s sharp recovery. The miner also made some key strategic moves during the period in its retail and rough operations that signal a change in mindset for the company. However, challenges remain, and there are still questions about the motivations behind some of those recent decisions and how it expects to navigate the market in the second half. Following the July 29 earnings release, Rapaport News met — virtually — with Sarah Kuijlaars, who took over as chief financial officer of the De Beers group in September 2020. The interview sought to uncover management’s perspective on its plan for the retail division, its recent string of special-stone purchases, and its prolonged negotiations with Botswana, among other pressing issues.
