Why did Tiffany Walk away from Costco Fight?

20 august 2021

(idexonline.com) - Tiffany & Co has never been afraid of going to court to protect its trademarks. In 2003 it was awarded $550,000 in statutory damages after the website www.finest4less.com refused to withdraw 28 counterfeit Tiffany items. Tiffany told the court it deserved the compensation - and wanted to deter counterfeiters. In 2010 it went head-to-head with the third-party platform eBay for enabling others to trade off its name.  It alleged direct and contributory trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and false advertising by virtue of the fact that the e-commerce giant had allowed counterfeit Tiffany jewelry to be advertised online.  It lost. Public court records in the US indicate that Tiffany embarked on at least 28 lawsuits between 1991 and 2016 over its copyrights, patents, and trademarks. So it was surprising to learn that the iconic New York jeweler was walking away from a fight with Costco, a fight it had pursued with zeal for almost eight-and-a-half years.

Jewelry Industry Is On The Verge Of Complete Collapse: National Task Force On Hallmarking

19 august 2021

(businessworld.in) - The Task Force states that the Bureau Of Indian Standards (BIS) cannot change the tradition and fabric of the jewelry industry by putting the livelihood of lakhs of jewellers at stake and thus affecting millions of dependents. The National Task force was formed out of 350 Associations / Federations representing East, West, central, North and South zones of the entire Gems & Jewellery Industry.  The objective of this committee is to ensure a smooth implementation of mandatory hallmarking across the country. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs formed an ‘Advisory Committee’ headed by DG BIS, with members comprising from BIS, various Ministries, export council, consumer forum and 3 members from the domestic Industry. As of today, post 3 meetings of the Expert Committee and 4 meetings of the Advisory Committee, barring a few issues, no substantial resolutions have taken place and nor any clarifications are being issued. BIS as an independent authority is only issuing FAQs, which has so many defects and ambiguities. It seems that the BIS is hell-bent upon enforcing things in their own way, not realizing the gravity of the concerns of the industry.

Diamond exploration resumes in Naujaat

17 august 2021

(nunavutnews.com) - North Arrow Minerals is continuing to evaluate the potential value of diamond reserves at its Naujaat property with a large-scale sampling program this summer. Ken Armstrong, CEO of North Arrow Minerals, said the company is hoping to get a better sense of the value of a special kind of coloured diamond that has been retrieved from previous samples. “There are these really intriguing potentially high-value diamonds,” said Armstrong. The Vancouver-based mining company has been evaluating the small area just a few kilometres outside of Naujaat since 2014. In the summer of 2014, North Arrow carried out a 1,350-tonne bulk sample of kimberlite in the area. That was followed by a 234-tonne mini bulk sample in 2017. Now the company is back to perform a 2,000-tonne bulk sample.
