India's Covid Crisis: The Tragic Cost of Complacency

30 april 2021

(idexonline.com) - A tragedy is unfolding in India. A nation that believed it had beaten the coronavirus pandemic just a few weeks ago now has two patients to a hospital bed, a critical shortage of oxygen, and round-the-clock cremations. Yesterday it recorded 314,644 new infections, more than any country in the world on any day since the start of the pandemic. And there were 2,104 deaths, another record for India. But those figures, shocking though they are, may tell only a fraction of the real story.

Stanford historian traces the colonial origins of conflict diamonds in Namibia

29 april 2021

(news.stanford.edu) - When Stanford historian Steven Press was trying to unearth hidden narratives about Germany’s colonial activities in Southwest Africa’s highly secretive diamond industry, he pursued that age-old maxim to “follow the money.” Chasing that trail led to some disturbing discoveries about the full extent of Germany’s ruthlessness as it pursued its economic aspirations in the African country now known as Namibia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Brilliant Luxury Substitutes: The Case for Lab-Grown Diamonds Ain’t Flawless… but It’s Pretty Damn Good

28 april 2021

(jingdaily.com) - First things first, while consumers worldwide are not getting married as much or are getting married later, the traditional use of diamonds will be under pressure, as traditional bridal products come across as sexist and outdated to a younger generation. Mined diamonds have many advantages though, don’t get me wrong. First, given the tremendous cost deflation in lab-grown diamonds, you might want a diamond ring to hold some value over time. If you purchase a USD20k ring with a lab-grown diamond and the industry proves to be a race to the bottom in terms of prices, how will you feel about that same ring being worth half the price the following year? Second, flawless has no charm: your knowing that all-natural diamonds are one of a kind while fabricated diamonds are flawless is not great from a marketing point of view. Presumably, you would like your stone to be unique. There are however three big reasons lab-grown diamonds have had some traction.

GIA Report Recall Has Dealers Turning Green

27 april 2021

(jckonline.com) - No one seems to know what to make of the GIA lab’s recent recall of certain reports it issued last year for green diamonds, except that, well, they don’t know what to make of it. GIA just sent out letters to dealers who submitted green diamonds to its lab between January and June 2020, saying the gems needed to be looked at again. (The rechecks will be free.) It’s also removed the reports for those diamonds from its online Report Check. Something must be up, especially given the very specific time frame. The implication is that something may have been done to certain diamonds. For the moment, GIA is keeping customarily tight-lipped.

Watchdog Cautions Diamond Council over Ad Claims

26 april 2021

(diamonds.net) - A US advertising regulator has rebuked the Natural Diamond Council (NDC) over its environmental claims following a complaint by Diamond Foundry, a lab-grown producer. The National Advertising Division, part of industry self-regulator BBB National Programs, has called on the NDC to stop using certain assertions that compare natural stones with synthetics, it said Thursday. These include statements that lab-grown diamonds emit three times more carbon than their mined counterparts.
