Forget GPS. The next navigation device is powered by quantum diamonds
25 june 2019
(sifted.eu) - What if you could use diamonds instead of GPS to navigate? It is a proposition that has all the elements of a James Bond thriller: quantum mechanics, high-tech gemstones and, yes, spies. Lockheed Martin, the US defence contractor and Europe’s Element Six, the synthetic diamond-producing arm of diamond company De Beers, are working on a navigation technology that would be perfect for covert operations because it is untrackable.
Las Vegas 2019: Guts without Glory
24 june 2019
(edahngolan.com) - When hit, we instinctively flinch. Close our eyes for a moment, crunch, and maybe turn sideways a little. But in a fight, that is the wrong thing to do. You’ll get hit, suffer and lose. Guts without glory. Every boxer knows that when a fist is heading in your direction, the smart thing to do is hit right back. It throws off your opponent, who is usually pretty open at that point, and this has a great psychological impact. In a fight, your goal is more than to remain standing. You want to win. No matter what, even of the cost is an occasional blow. To win, you may need to suffer some pain, so hit back, don’t stop attacking, don’t flinch. The diamond industry used to be a prize winner. It was young, feisty, fast, hungry, well financed, and had the ultimate sponsor. But at more than 100 years old, it’s a little tired, has less energy, bouncing back is tougher, the slower response time does not allow it to hit back when a blow is sent in its direction. Is the diamond industry an aging fighter losing its stand? A few recent events, including the just concluded trade shows in Las Vegas, may provide an answer.
The Union State to flood the whole world with diamonds
21 june 2019
(scientificrussia.ru) - At the extended meeting of the Bureau of the Inter-Academy Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), the scientists of the Union State took the decision to develop a new Union programme for mining and processing of rough diamonds. This is not about the gems we used to see in rings and necklaces but about the polycrystalline diamonds used in the mining and processing industry. As academician Pyotr Vityaz, Chief of the Presidium Staff of the NASB, told, the world’s largest Popigai impact polycrystalline diamond deposit discovered back in the 1970s was declassified, with the reserves of 10 trillion carats (about 2 mn tons). By now, 162 bn carats reserves have been registered, which is 35 times more than those of all the inferred industrial kimberlite diamond reserves.
