The Lab-Grown Diamond Industry Is Still Out-Hustling the Natural
05 march 2019
(jckonline.com) - For the last six months, I have written a lot on lab-grown diamonds. Sometimes, I feel I’m writing too much. I have asked myself, “Why haven’t I been covering other issues or companies?” But now I realize that might not be the right question. In 2014, I wrote that the lab-grown diamond industry was out-promoting the natural. That is even more pronounced now. I don’t get many pitches from natural diamond companies. And some of the pitches I do get are kind of dull. By contrast, I get at least two or three pitches on lab-grown diamonds a week. They often borrow ideas from the natural industry and repackage them in flashy ways: An all-diamond ring! The Victoria’s Secret bra! A proposal contest!
Oversupply an Issue at Hong Kong Show
04 march 2019
(diamonds.net) - Dealers at the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show expressed concerns about sluggish polished demand and an oversupply of goods in the wholesale segment. Inventory moved slowly despite busy traffic at the fair, which began last week, people who attended the event told Rapaport News. A surplus of lower-value polished has spooked the market, with attendees bringing a large volume of goods to the exhibition. The number of stones on the RapNet Show Listings service, an electronic catalog of inventory, grew to a record 160,000 for the Hong Kong event, compared with the usual 100,000 to 130,000.

01 march 2019
(valuewalk.com) - Diamond miners are struggling amid disappointing prices during the holiday season and into the new year. However, it appears the weakness isn’t affecting the entire industry uniformly. It’s the “smalls,” or smaller stones, which have offset the supply/ demand balance, resulting in higher prices for bigger stones based on their sizes rather than purely on quality and carat number. Since smaller-size stones are weighing on overall diamond prices, the well-known phrase from the film The Sandlot comes to mind: “You’re killin’ me, Smalls!”
