De Beers Has a Clean-Up Plan for Blood Diamonds
07 may 2018
(bloomberg.com) - Diamond mining giant De Beers plans to fix one of the industry’s oldest problems: the reputational stain of artisanal mining. The world’s top diamond miner is set to start a pilot program in Sierra Leone that will help trace the route from mine to consumer for what it calls ethically-sourced artisanal gems. The Anglo American Plc unit will train miners and provide them with equipment to digitally track their finds, and aims to buy the first such stones from them this year.
Mercury Polished Diamond Prices: Slight Price Declines in March
28 april 2018
(ehudlaniado.com) - The polished diamond price increases that characterized the start of the year have largely ended. With few exceptions, prices of diamonds in all categories headed down in March, ending the positive run that began with the consumer rush in the US in late December. It continued throughout January and February, and ended on the back of the gem trade show in Hong Kong that fell below expectations. The March declines, if continued into April and May, will continue the trend of polished diamond price declines that started in mid-2014 and continued almost uninterrupted until December 2017. The direction that prices will take in the next couple of months is important, because it will signal one of two understandings of the consumer market: if the price declines in March are temporary and start rising again in April and May, we will know that the extended price decline hit rock bottom, and the diamond industry will have a good understanding of what consumers are willing to pay. If, however, prices continue to decline in the coming months, this would indicate that prices are still too high, and the diamond industry, from polished wholesalers to rough diamond miners, will continue to contract until the new price base is found.
Fancy Color Diamonds – Appreciation or Profit? How to manage expectations
27 april 2018
(fcresearch.org) - The recent $9 million lawsuit made by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees created a serious buzz in the diamond and jewelry community. Following the news, we received endless inquiries from jewelry stores, wholesalers and investment companies asking the FCRF to shed some light on the subject, with a particularly high volume of queries focused on strategies for meeting expectations when purchasing a fancy color diamond as an investment. According to a lawsuit filed on April 2nd, Mr. Brees claims that a San Diego retailer did not “act in good faith” by selling him $14,535,004 worth of “investment grade” fancy color diamonds over the course of a decade with an allegedly unreasonable profit margin. An independent appraiser evaluated the jewelry at $6.5 million.
De Beers' ASM Diamond Initiative Critical Step for Industry
26 april 2018
(idexonline.com) - By far the most important announcement this week was that of the De Beers Group that it is preparing to pilot a program called GemFair to create a secure and transparent route to market for ethically-sourced artisanal and small-scale mined (ASM) diamonds. The diamond miner said that GemFair will use dedicated technology to record ASM production at mine sites that meet demonstrable ethical standards, with the aim of purchasing of rough diamonds from approved locations while helping improve working conditions and livelihoods for those working in the sector.
