Diamond Portraits: Abraham ‘Bram’ Fischler
07 march 2018
(ehudlaniado.com) - Abraham ‘Bram’ Fischler was honored numerous times throughout his life for his many achievements, but more than anything, he should be credited for his pivotal role in establishing the Kimberly Process, a United Nations backed effort to limit trade in rough diamonds to countries that adhere to strict controls and by doing so to prevent diamonds from being used to help finance civil wars.
Fraud in sight, De Beers cuts India's rough diamond allocation
06 march 2018
(rediff.com) - The world’s leading diamond mining group, De Beers, has reduced its India “sight” or allocation for rough diamonds for February by around 10 per cent. The involvement of big names, including Mehul Choksi of Gitanjali Gems and Nirav Modi, has made this company cautious, industry sources said. The industry is also cutting down on business ahead of the closing of the financial year, they added. De Beers Group press office declined to give details of specific sights but responding to an email query regarding recent cases of frauds in the diamond industry, the spokesperson said, “We do not comment on individual businesses, but we require compliance with strict criteria at Global Sightholder Sales relating to financial propriety and industry reputation issues -- we don’t trade with any business where we have specific concerns.”
The world's first 'smog vacuum cleaner' can suck up air pollution and turn it into jewelry
05 march 2018
(businessinsider.com) - The air we breathe is not as clean as it once was. And in many cases, it is getting worse. On high-smog days in Kraków, Poland, the city's air pollution can reach six times that of safe levels. And in the United States, about 4 in 10 people live in counties that have unhealthy levels of either ozone or particle pollution, according to the American Lung Association. To help clean up the air, Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde created a 23-foot-tall air purifier called the Smog-Free Tower in 2015. Now, he's installing a tower at Jordana Park in Kraków, where it will stay from February 16 to April 15. The air purifier doesn’t just clean up smog, it can also be used to make fine jewelry.
Permafrost Melting: A Candid Discussion with ALROSA CEO Sergey Ivanov
02 march 2018
(thediamondloupe.com) - Sergey Ivanov (37), the young CEO and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the world’s largest diamond miner, ALROSA, was in Antwerp for the company’s annual meeting with its 56 long-term clients. ALROSA is a traditional company in a traditional business, and still evokes the reputation of a state-owned giant despite the partial privatization (currently 34%) of the company a few years ago. However, to anyone paying attention, there has been a palpable change in the style and scope of the company’s communications this past year, and after the discussion The Diamond Loupe was granted with Mr. Ivanov, it became clear that this shift toward a policy of openness started at the top. The Russian permafrost appears to be melting (no, the title does not refer to global warming). What follows is a summary of a most candid and substantial conversation in which no topic was off limits – neither questions about his appointment as CEO, nor his appearance on the U.S. ‘Kremlin list’.
Lucapa talks up Angola despite Endiama’s tight grip on control
01 march 2018
(miningmx.com) - Australian-listed junior, Lucapa Diamond Company, talked up diamond mining prospects in Angola on the back of the success of its Lulo alluvial diamond mine and the pro-foreign investment stance of new president, Joao Lourenco. Since being elected in September last year, Lourenco has embarked on a campaign to diversify the Angolan economy from its overwhelming dependence on oil as well as promote foreign direct investment into the country. But that has to be a “hard sell” for both Lucapa and Lourenco given Angola’s poor track record in the treatment of foreign mining companies which has resulted in a string of diamond explorers and producers leaving the country over the past decade.
