Diamond Portraits – Charles Tiffany
10 january 2018
(ehudlaniado.com) - Iconic Tiffany & Co. is among the most recognizable brand names in the world and one of the most valuable retail jewelry companies. A 2015 brand survey ranked it as the 66th most valuable brand name in the world, with a brand value in excess of $6 billion. Surprisingly, however, the company did not get its start in jewelry nor was it even called Tiffany & Co. The company began operating in 1837 as Tiffany & Young, a stationary and fancy goods emporium in lower Manhattan founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young. It wasn’t until Charles Tiffany took control of the company in 1853 that he shortened the name to Tiffany & Company, and established the firm’s emphasis on diamond jewelry.
2018 Global Diamond Industry Primer
09 january 2018
(paulzimnisky.com) - Through mid-December 2017, rough diamond prices are up 2.7%* year-to-date, while polished prices are down 3.5%**. However, despite shrinking manufacturer margins, the midstream segment of the industry still bought $5.3B worth of diamonds from De Beers this year, including $450M at the final sight which was 7% over the comparable sight last year and 81% over 2015. De Beers’ full-year sales were -5% relative to last year and +53% over 2015. Russian-major, ALROSA (MICEX: ALRS), is on pace to sell $4.4B of diamonds in 2017, which would be in line with 2016 and 27% over 2015. 2017 has been a year of excess inventory shifting from the upstream segment of the diamond industry to the mid-stream segment. For instance, industry leaders De Beers and ALROSA have both see their inventories decrease by an estimated 1.6M and 2.3M carats, respectively, through Q3 2017, this despite both producers also increasing production this year. World-wide natural diamond production is estimated to rise to approximately 148M carats in 2017 which would be a 7% increase in volume over last year. The increase mostly due to the commencement of production at three new mines, the ramping-up of production at previously curtailed operations and expansion projects at legacy mines.
Diamond Portraits - Mary Frances Gerety
04 january 2018
(ehudlaniado.com) - Mary Frances Gerety is not a name that many people are familiar with, even those in the diamond industry. She produced one of the most brilliant pieces of diamond marketing ever, and all of us working in diamonds owe our livelihoods in part to her. Gerety, who went by her middle name Frances, coined the immortal marketing slogan “a diamond is forever". When it was launched, it helped to associate diamonds with love, and solidified the role of diamonds in marriage and engagements. Today’s diamond industry owes its survival largely to this successful marketing drive.

Record-Breaking Diamond Prices Prove They are Assets
29 december 2017
(ehudlaniado.com) - Once again, exceptional diamonds are breaking size and price records at auctions. On Wednesday, a world auction record for a fancy light pink diamond was set at Sotheby’s auction of Magnificent and Noble Jewels, when a 33.63-carat fancy light pink diamond sold for $12.8 million. The day before, an emerald-cut, D color flawless diamond, weighing 163.41 carats set in an emerald and diamond necklace sold for $33.7 million at Christie’s Magnificent Jewel auction. This was the largest emerald-shaped diamond ever sold at auction. The ongoing string of record-breaking prices, sometimes more frequent, at times slower, proves the importance of diamonds as investment-grade assets. Over the past 30 years, we have seen time and again that prices continue to rise, both when inflation is minimal and money is “cheap” or conversely when inflation and interest rates were high. Top and clarity diamonds with the best make continued to outpace inflation.
