City of ploy: Surat beats Kolkata to become India's new shell firm capital
28 december 2017
(business-standard.com) - Surat has replaced Kolkata to become the new capital of shell firms that evade taxes. According to the Income Tax (I-T) department, a majority of the companies featuring on the new list of shell firms provided by the government are based in Surat. Kolkata had topped the first list. The tax department began tightening the noose around shell firms earlier this year, as more details about such companies came to light after demonetisation. In the new list, tax officials have found that over 80 per cent of the 2,138 shell firms, which had deposited unaccounted cash of at least Rs 5,000 crore during the note ban, were from Surat. The tax department expects this number to go up.

An interview with Rapaport, the diamond maverick
27 december 2017
(jewellermagazine.com) - Martin Rapaport is never short of words when it comes to diamonds. Coleby Nicholson met with the industry nonconformist to discuss the current state of the international diamond market. Martin Rapaport: most people in the industry will know the name, or at least recognise the face and signature bow tie. The founder and chairman of Rapaport Group, which publishes Rapaport magazine and operates online trading platform RapNet among other products and services, began his career in the diamond industry in 1975 as an apprentice diamond cleaver in Antwerp. His Wikipedia page notes that he has been called a ‘maverick’ within the diamond industry and probably rightly so. I met with Rapaport in July to discuss the state of the industry and his often counter-intuitive and controversial stances on various industry issues.
Alrosa Is Latest to Mull Diamond Blockchain
26 december 2017
(diamonds.net) - Alrosa is considering implementing blockchain or other technology ideas for its rough and polished stones to address challenges with conflict diamonds and undisclosed synthetics, the miner told Rapaport News. “If the industry manages to build a tracing system, it would solve several problems and challenges it faces at the moment,” a spokesperson for the Russian company said in an email last week. “It will allow [the industry] to close the issue[s] of conflict diamonds, as well as undisclosed synthetics. In an ideal scenario, the traceability system should track and provide…information about [the] time and place of mining a rough diamond, information about manufacturers, and all the steps the stone [went through] before it hit the store shelves,” the miner added.
