The best diamonds in the world are buried at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean
14 november 2017
(qz.com) - The best diamonds in the world come from the sea. Swept up from riverbeds by the mighty Orange River in southern Africa back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, their bumpy journey to the Atlantic polished them and broke up any stones with flaws, ensuring only the strongest and best survived. Those diamonds landed off the coast of what is now Namibia, creating the world’s richest marine-diamond deposit. The country’s territorial waters are now estimated to hold 80 million carats, and the world’s biggest diamond miner, De Beers, has quietly built up an armada off the coast to vacuum up those precious gems.
Analysis: The State of the Colored Stone Market
13 november 2017
(nationaljeweler.com) - It’s a topic that seems to be on everyone’s lips right now, communicated through the use of various buzz words: responsible sourcing, due diligence, transparency. They’re all different parts of the same conversation that has been popping up not only in jewelry but across consumers goods industries in recent years. The jewelry industry already has been working to make progress but, now, also needs to find ways to make those efforts known. “We need to stay one step or more ahead of public sentiment,” CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri says, adding that the process of inclusive industry dialogue is critical to allow for cooperation and efforts at all parts of the supply chain, from mine to market. Yet for the colored gemstone market, which is incredibly nuanced in its size and scope, it’s not quite as easy to get everyone on the same page.
Beneficiation in the Diamond Industry: Other Countries
10 november 2017
(ehudlaniado.com) - So far in our look at beneficiation in the diamond industry, we have seen how many countries have attempted to leverage their rough diamond resources to create additional wealth and employment within their borders. There have been successes and failures, and for many, the longer-term outcome is still unknown. However, in keeping with our broader definition of beneficiation to include the overall benefit of diamonds to any economy, it is important to see how diamonds have helped non-producer nations as well. There are many countries in the world that have never unearthed a single rough diamond, but that still enjoy important economic benefits from the diamond trade.
The diamond industry is looking to millennials
09 november 2017
(cnbc.com) - The diamond industry is expected to grow in coming years on strong demand from China, India and the U.S., but there is a key hurdle ahead: millennials. Speaking with CNBC's "Street Signs" this last July, Charles Rosario, senior vice president of Lazare Diamonds, reflected on the role the millennial generation — broadly defined as those born between the 1980s and early 2000s— will play in his industry. "They are not the diamond market today, but they are the future," he said. But they already are putting some of their money into diamonds: De Beers' 2016 Diamond Insight report said that in 2015, the millennial generation spent nearly $26 billion on diamond jewelry in the U.S, China, Japan and India combined. Millennials represent a significant opportunity for the diamond industry, but have different shopping behaviors, and product interests. That suggests that dedicated marketing efforts are needed to target those customers effectively.
Grib Mine Projects Higher Sales in 2017
08 november 2017
(diamonds.net) - Full-year diamond production from the Grib mine in Russia is on track to rise 16% in 2017, contributing to an overall increase in sales from the operation. The mine’s output is expected to reach 4.4 million carats in 2017, compared with 3.8 million carats last year, Alexey Genkin — general manager of the mine’s marketing unit, Grib Diamonds — told Rapaport News during a recent visit to the Israel Diamond Exchange, as part of the bourse's drive to enhance its rough trading platform. The plan is to raise production to 4.9 million carats in 2018, he said in the interview.
