Diamond market crash is Africa’s opportunity, not its crisis – M'zée Fula Ngenge

Global natural diamond supply is forecast to fall below 95 million carats this year, the lowest since 1987. For Dr. M'zée Fula Ngenge, chairperson of the African Diamond Council (ADC), this is not a death knell but a clarion call. In an exclusive...

Market Report: August 2013, India

11 september 2013

The month of August began on a cheerful note mixed with apprehensions about the outcome of the India International Jewellery Show 2013(IIJS 2013). But IIJS 2013 clearly went one way with jewellery faring much better than loose diamonds. This goes for both the domestic as well as overseas demand. But market analysts however feel the slow demand for polished goods at the Show may not be the real picture, as post-show deals normally turn out better than what meets the eye. The large number of overseas buyers in the market can vouch for this theory.

Diamond Facet of the Syrian Conflict

09 september 2013

Discussions over the Syrian problem at G20 Summit held in Saint-Petersburg were looking meaningfully fruitless (especially the attempts to determine who used the chemical weapons on 21 August), meanwhile the above were useful in the context of crystallization of each party's position. The situation looks quite clear and, as opposed to the previous stages of the “Arab Spring”, the real grounds of the participants do not need ideological disguise.

Lessons of success in network marketing for jewelers

02 september 2013

There are at least five network jewelry companies in the U.S. alone, which have driven their annual sales above $ 100 million. Half of them were established less than five years ago. Today, their jewelry and accessories are distributed by an army of tens of thousands of consultants. And for some vague reason, we do not include data coming from such companies into market research results and analysis of the jewelry industry. Here are some lessons of success in network marketing for jewelry sales.

India International Jewellery Show 2013

26 august 2013

A visitor to the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS 2013) in Mumbai earlier this month may have been baffled at the opulence and grandeur that he saw all around. More so after the recent crisis like the weakening rupee, gold crisis, rough shortage, government restrictions, stocks and shares of jewellery companies sliding down and a host of other woes faced by the gem and jewellery industry. But right from Day One, footfalls told another story and gave a mixed message about the industry.

Market report: Keep calm, we've been through it already

19 august 2013

Have you ever experienced deja vu? A drawing sensation when it seems that you have been in this place and witnessed these events? If so, then you probably know the important feature of déjà vu: it usually does not bode well. Looking at the diamond market, sometimes it seems that it lives in a permanent state of déjà vu. And looking at the numbers and graphs, you realize that it does not "seem" to you at all.

The World Diamond Mark

12 august 2013

The World Diamond Mark (WDM) program introduced at the 35th World Diamond Congress in Mumbai was to start in July 2013. WDM is a project of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and from the point of view of this organization “represents the largest-ever diamond marketing program.” The generic marketing has become a painful problem for the industry since the time when De Beers refused from the single-channel system of market regulation and stopped funding the associated programs, focusing on promoting their own brands. To what extent is the World Diamond Mark able to mend the situation?

July: Trading in Mumbai quite active but not as expected

05 august 2013

The resilient Indian diamond industry geared up during the month of July to face hurdles head on, whether it is a weakened rupee, rough shortage or high rough prices. Traders and manufacturers took whatever steps necessary to keep moving - they had a business to run.

A Dark Season for Gold Mining

29 july 2013

In a moderately optimistic environment for global economy, a voice stands out of the crowd: the one of gold miners. The latest of a long series of alarms on the effects that falling gold price is having on the extraction business was launched by Nick Holland, CEO of Gold Fields. “The industry is not sustainable at $1,230 an ounce, which is where the gold price is at the moment,” Holland reportedly said.

June market in India: ups and downs

15 july 2013

The Indian diamond industry saw many ups and downs during the month of June. While the cutting centres attempted to restart after the holidays, they were faced with rough shortage problems, especially the small and medium units. Media reports that diamond workers were laid off from work also made the news, citing the drastic fall in the Indian Rupee against the US$ as the reason; and the resulting inability of small and medium sized units to keep their factories running due to high cost of rough.
