ALROSA: The results of privatization and IPO

18 november 2013

The privatization and IPO of ALROSA have become a fait accompli. The sale of shares on the MICEX started with collecting bids from those who wanted to buy shares on October 14, 2013 and ended late in the evening on October 25, 2013. The so-called bid book registered bids from 71 companies. Taking into account the incipient recession in the Russian economy by the end of the year, it is safe to say that the IPO was carried out by ALROSA in a timely manner and at a high enough price.

Why do jewelers need to examine and certify gold supply chains?

28 october 2013

What is the best way for a jewelry company to confirm that gold or gold jewelry, which it buys for manufacturing, retail or wholesale, is not coming from some problem-ridden riot areas, where they serve as a conflict tool and where underage workers die of hard toil in the mines? With all the abundance of regulations, standards and guidelines on how to separate "good" gold from "bad", even I, a journalist who covers the industry, have no clear vision how it can be done. So I decided to look more closely into the matter and find out what is happening to the standards for socially responsible gold.

Pure diamond injection

21 october 2013

While discussing prospects for the upcoming IPO of ALROSA, industry and market experts largely overlook one aspect of no little importance. Just as large-scale injection of high quality diamonds to the market may devalue the already available stones, the emergence of a stake of shares in ALROSA to be traded in the public field may damage the investment attractiveness of listed miners, the major of which are Dominion, Petra and Gem.

Diamond Prices in India: An analysis

07 october 2013

High rough prices and flat polished prices has been the bane of the Indian diamond industry of late, eating into the already wafer-thin profit margins. Needless to say, if the current trend continues, a shake-up in the Indian cutting and polishing sector is imminent and some small and medium sized units in the Indian cutting centres may have to close shop. In the event of such a thing happening, will the sector become stronger and more efficient?
