What Keeps Jewelers Up At Night? The Biggest Risks To Business In 2017
28 september 2017
(news.centurionjewelry.com) - Independent jewelers aren’t the only ones worrying about the future of retail. The 2017 BDO Retail Risk Factor Report, a study examining the 10-K filings of the 100 largest publicly-traded retailers in the United States, found retailers of all kinds are worried about many of the same things jewelers are: digital disruption, economic concerns, and changing consumer tastes, shopping habits, and priorities. But the biggest issue weighing on the minds of large public retailers is cybersecurity, something jewelers don’t seem concerned about yet.
This Jewelry Crawls on You
27 september 2017
(jckonline.com) - Some wearers compared the jewelry to a pet or an animal. When one experienced a piece of jewelry walking on her neck, she said it felt like being licked by a dog. And many, not surprisingly, found the whole thing “creepy.” These comments were garnered from the 17 test subjects for the “living jewelry” prototypes developed by MIT Media Labs. The organization’s Kino Project seems set on developing jewelry that’s more than smart, it’s active. By inserting miniature (2.6 by 4 cm.) magnetized robots into jewelry, the pieces can creep across the user’s body, looking like insects covered in wallpaper. The pieces can also change shape, so in the morning one can be a brooch and by evening, a necklace.

(polishedprices.com) - Not much new knocking around at the moment, as far as I can see. My chums at Gem Diamond continue to meet expectations with appalling results, revenue down, EBITA crashing down some 70%, earning per share down to 0.04 US cents compared to 9.70 US cents for the comparable period last year…. I last wrote about this shambles in March when the share price was £1.11 and now stands at 85.50 pence, or a fall of 23%, despite a fillip last week of 7% on the news that they may have found a buyer for Ghaghoo, the Botswana mine that they have put into care and maintenance to reopen when the market improves. ‘Market improve’, De Beers had a good first half and say that they expect the second half to be strong, so what are Gem waiting for? I must say I find it difficult that anyone would want to buy Ghaghoo as it has proved to be a total dog to date, so I am not going to be holding my breath and if it is sold I will be fascinated on what terms, perhaps with a book of Green Shield stamps.
Support Services: Sorting and Sales
25 september 2017
(ehudlaniado.com) - Over the past few weeks, we have looked at a number of companies that exist to provide support services to miners, manufacturers, and other businesses in the diamond industry. These third-party providers provide expertise that allows other businesses to focus on their main objectives. They can often achieve certain tasks at a much lower cost than if done in house. In my final article for this series, I want to look at rough sorting, valuation, and sales, which have quickly become high-demand services for miners, as more and more diamond mines are being developed by single asset miners.
Will you marry me... I'll buy you a ring later! Quarter of men now pop the question without a sparkler to give to their potential partner
22 september 2017
(dailymail.co.uk) - A man would purchase a ring and propose to his partner on a bended knee – usually over a fancy dinner. But these days a quarter of men have asked the most important question of their lives without having even bought a ring, according to a new poll.
