Are Shoppers Turning Away From Expensive Jewelry?
14 september 2017
(jckonline.com) - Slate’s advice columnist, Dear Prudence, recently fielded the following question from a woman who was embarrassed by the engagement ring bought by her fiancé: "The diamond is so big, and the setting so flashy, it’s completely unlike the kind of rings most of my friends got….I’ve gotten so much unwanted attention, with people asking to see “the rock” and calling me celebrity nicknames. My mom has used every synonym for tacky in the book, and friends have asked if I know whether or not it’s a blood diamond. It’s humiliating. My fiancé is so proud that he was able to get me such a nice ring since he comes from a working-class background. I just don’t know how to tell him that I want him to take it back and get a semi-precious stone or something more to my taste…" For many in the industry, this comment seems absurd. Who complains about jewelry being too big? But societal tastes are changing. To many, flashy has become synonymous with excessive, and wasteful.
Global Witness ruffles AWDC’s feathers with ‘recycled old garbage’ Marange diamond report
14 september 2017
The Global Witness released a report on Zimbabwe’s Marange diamonds, which in all fairness, revealed nothing that wasn’t in the public domain. It wasn’t an earth-shattering report, one would say, but a mere recycling of the old garbage. Be that as it may, the report alleged that Zimbabwe’s diamonds were left to the mercy of the country’s “highly partisan” security services and political elites, much to the detriment of development and democracy. Although, not a new allegation, it claimed that the country's vast diamond riches were used to fund repression while political leaders clandestinely profited from the diamond trade.
Lucara Diamond's (LUCRF) CEO William Lamb on Q2 2017 Results - Earnings Call Transcript

(seekingalpha.com) - The revenues for Q2 set at just under $80 million or over $1,300 per carat of that obviously being driven by the exceptional stone tender, which we had in Q2 with diamonds recovered from both Q2 and Q1 being sold. That brought our revenue for the year to just over $105 million or just under $106 million. We compare that to the $140 million from last year for Q2 and a high number Q3. So operating margins again were very strong at 82% and this comes again from what I think management and the guys on started to do a very good job on, and that is focusing on cost control. And I’m sure that there almost going to be one or two questions around the mining contractor.

De Beers Not Participating in GIA Program
11 september 2017
(jckonline.com) - Recently, De Beers’ senior vice president of sightholder sales, Bernard Bradley, sent his company’s clients the following note, "Several [sightholders] have contacted us recently by requesting permission to confirm to supply chain partners that specific goods originate from a primary De Beers source. Several of the discussions have been in relation to programs such as GIA’s M2M [Mine to Market (pictured)] or other…initiatives seeking to make provenance claims. We have declined all such requests." Bradley explains that representing goods as from De Beers has “significant potential to create consumer confusion in relation to [retail chain] De Beers Diamond Jewelers.”
