Of diamonds and dynasties

01 september 2017

(resourceclips.com) - Legendary diamonds have long been associated with imperial dynasties. Now, just as a new book promises to revive interest in the multi-empire story of the fabled Koh-i-Noor gem, Alrosa has unveiled a suite of five stones commemorating great families of old Russia. In doing so, the mining giant marks a new emphasis not just on extracting exceptional stones, but cutting and polishing them too. The company says it will use state-of-the-art techniques to revive traditions dating back to Peter I. A near-second to De Beers as the world’s largest diamond miner by value, Alrosa’s overall strategy might be to broaden diamonds’ appeal beyond the maybe one (or two, or sometimes profligately multiple) life events that call for an engagement ring.

Shmuck’s Ville

31 august 2017

(polishedprices.com) - By chance I happened to see a short series of what I would call podcasts on the BBC entitled ‘The Life of Luxury.’ I looked at two of them, one centered on Dior and the other Bulgari. One reason for watching them was that neither was longer than a couple of minutes or so, and therefore in my attention span capacity. To me, the very term ‘luxury’ has become rather debased and these brief pieces on the BBC of all places to discuss such a topic only confirmed the point to me. As I have pointed before, any visit to an airport elicits ennui at the same branded ‘luxury’ shops, if you can so readily access something I think that it is then difficult to define it as ‘luxury’.

What Setup the Latest Bankruptcy?

30 august 2017

(edahngolan.com) - I’ll open with a confession: I don’t know where I’m going with this text. I usually start writing knowing what I want to say, and with a conclusion in mind. The conclusion is a destination. But not today. The thing is that it’s not just me – it’s the industry too. We don’t know where we are going, and that is the setup for a bankruptcy, a very disturbing thought. It has yet to be published, but a major diamond company is apparently going down. The size of its debts are unknown at this point, but the scale is understood – in the many tens of millions of dollars. The debts are said to be split about half and half between banks and the diamond industry. The company is considered a well-established one, not known as a risk taker or as a company that pays exuberantly for its rough, and to me this is the most disconcerting aspect. A company that at least appeared to act prudently has taken a major hit. Not a reckless company, not one that gambled big on odd ventures, not a company that relied heavily on supplying goods on memo to American specialty retailers. None of these to my knowledge. Nobody ever spoke negatively about them. Just a “regular” company.

Support Services: Brokers

29 august 2017

(ehudlaniado.com) - Since the early South African diamond rush of the 1870s, the role of De Beers, the market leader in rough diamond mining and sales, has changed dramatically. Going back to its early days, and continuing to the present, De Beers has utilized various brokerage firms to facilitate sales to diamond manufacturers, and to provide various other services. As the role of De Beers has changed, so has the role of the brokers, who serve both the miner and its customers. Let’s take a look at the role of brokers, and how their services have evolved over the last 140 years.

The Key To Confidence In The Diamond Sector

28 august 2017

(idexonline.com) - They say that confidence is the key to success, and that preparation is the key to confidence. And from my years as President of De Beers Group’s International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR), I can safely say that this is certainly true of the diamond sector. Confidence is an increasingly vital component of success at all stages of the diamond value chain, and you can’t provide that confidence unless you have a wealth of knowledge and hard work behind you. That’s why De Beers Group established IIDGR.
