Rapaport Urges India to Scrap Diamond Import Tax
21 march 2017
(diamonds.net) - Martin Rapaport, chairman of the Rapaport Group, called on India to show reciprocity in its trade relationship with the United States. “America is and will be India’s most important market,” Rapaport said on Monday at the ‘Mines to Market’ conference, marking 50 years of India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council. “American demand will grow significantly due to new economic policies and the U.S. government will insist on a level playing field,” he added, citing President Donald Trump’s policy of leveraging American power to rebalance what he considers to be unfair trade ties with large export nations such as China.
Agarwal’s £2bn gambit could put Anglo American into play
20 march 2017
(miningmx.com) - Anil Agarwal’s £2bn investment in Anglo American shares, giving his trust – Volcan Investments – a 13% stake in the UK-listed firm, was an attempt to flush out rival bidders for Anglo’s assets or buy the South African assets identified by CEO, Mark Cutifani, as non-core, said analysts. “From a strategic point of view, some kind of deal could potentially hand Anglo a solution to their problem of perceived ‘over-weighting’ towards South Africa,” said Paul Gait, an analyst for Bernstein. “It could put Agarwal in a prime position to take the South African assets – the African limb he desires for Vedanta – and allow Anglo American to achieve the kind of South Africa exit that it, in turn, desires,” he said.
A Trip Through the Diamond Industry in March 2017
17 march 2017
(paulzimnisky.com) - As the diamond industry marks its foray into 2017, Q1 demand for rough has been stronger relative to Q4 2016 and also relative to a year ago. Christmas season 2016, albeit mediocre, and a strong 2017 Chinese New year has driven seasonal restocking demand, and most, but not all, Indian cutters have begun to show signs of recovery after the initial shock of the demonetization last year. Last year, most miners liquidated excess rough inventories which they accumulated in 2015, and have since ramped-up production into 2017, resuming more normal pre-indigestion output levels of three years ago. Demand growth this year is likely to come from a post-election U.S. market where employment is stable and the stock market is at an all-time-high, driving positive sentiment that should translate into discretionary spending. The U.S. is the largest diamond jewelry market in the world representing 45% of global demand. China, the world’s second largest jewelry market, at 16% of global demand, should be driven by continued government stimulus and an ever-expanding middle-class consumer. India, representing 8% of the market, should show improvement year-over-year as domestic demand for jewelry returns as the demonetization impact is digested, especially in the second half of the year.
February Market Report
16 march 2017
(ehudlaniado.com) - Activity in the midstream of the diamond pipeline was mixed in the past month. On one hand, the high level of activity typical in the post-New Year and holiday sales season was not seen as much this year. On the other hand, traders are reporting steady demands and prices, with a few pockets of occasional rise in local demand for polished. The highlight was activity during the Hong Kong trade show, where trading activity was above the levels seen in recent months. Noteworthy was the purchase of Blue Nile by Bain Capital, which creates a sense of uncertainty among some of their vendors. The drop in Signet sales has rattled the market, which was used to seeing the leading US retailer doing well even when most others didn’t. At Tiffany, the poor results led to the immediate dismissal of the CEO, and the appointment of three new directors to the board, representing a key shareholder. On the rough goods side, De Beers hiked prices of rough in January, stretching the price too high, as indicated by the lower prices goods got at tenders that took place in the following weeks. In February, demand for rough recoiled to a certain degree. Polished diamond prices continue to soften, and the Mercury Diamond Global Tracker™ (MDGT) declined 0.07% in January.
Anglo American CEO Sets Out Way Mining Industry Should Operate
16 march 2017
(idexonline.com) - A recent speech by Mark Cutifani, the CEO of Anglo American plc which owns 85 percent of De Beers, on the recent history of the global mining industry provided an excellent summary of what has been happening and what miners need to do going forward. Speaking to the Prospectors And Developers Association Of Canada, he naturally focused on what has been happening at Anglo American over the past year or so, but his comments on mining apply in large part to the diamond business – and indeed to other sectors.
